Time to Write

Gajendra Kumar Patel (A first generation immigrant!)

Awoke one day to realize a need to contribute

So he chose to present his thought to a mentor

And joined a senior writing group in a small town

He expressed his thoughts in broken English phrases

They sounded like preaching but he wasn't a preacher

He asked why his writing sounded like a sermon

But his mentor said to write what your observations

added not to worry about comments just write

It was encouraging so he kept on writing

Gajendra moved away but kept going to the writing group

Then in summer he found another senior group

That met every week two miles from his new home

He walked there to read his writing but confused them

With his English and they asked him to take an ESL class

He went to the community education program

And the supervisor tested his knowledge of English

Then quickly placed him in the advanced class

The teacher said his skill of writing was good

And volunteered to help him in spelling and grammar

Gajendra took a chance to relearn English

And took the time to write this piece as a challenge

I bring you wealth of language toolbox

A toolbox full of beautiful words

Let’s use them to make phrases and sentences.

They can be humorous to keep harmony

You will wonder, “How it can be humorous?”

Let’s “Be aware of the place at present and

Beware of own perception for future hope”

You say, “Now, I will bend myself to blend and

Get along to learn for a long to be productive”

I can say, “Agree and accept you belong to us”

We know now “we adopt and adore each other”

Let’s believe to keep harmony for mutual benefit

By learning the basics, we began to achieve it

Staying in harmony we will have a joyful future

Our Dreams

It was hot summer year of a nineteen fifty three

I was walking in the wood which had tall trees

There was a big black rock on a bank of a river

She was sitting on a bank with few poems’ book

I was young with a dream of writing a little book

I was not hurrying without worry to read her look

There were little birds swimming in the near by brook

She noticed me looking at her serene look in the brook

I didn’t stand still and look around but went close to her

I said gently “Please, do your have a time to talk about reading”

She responded, “Now I have time to talk about your waiting”

We walk and talk, then agreed on writing a book of “Our dreams

Let me, Play a Part

Parents gave me a body

Almighty gave me a soul

Community gave a mind

Let me, play a part

Mather mentored me to age

Father gave me privilege

Family kept me faithful

I should not play fool

Nature nurture us all in all

At school, I gained a skill

At store, I paid the price

Please, don’t tear apart

Alas! I walk and talk

Yes! I read and write

Alas! I sit and recite

Let me, play a part

Oh! I beg, your pardon

Just, let me play a part

Baby Jack

Grandma can't stop kissing little Jack

on his soft and fragile newborn head

his blue eyes alert in her warmth

hugging against the soft breast

She plants one kiss after another

as if all the kisses of his parents

and his parents' parents accrue

with interest in a family legacy

bestowed on him for his delight
